Cantaloupes

Cantaloupes

In Season: Peak availability between April and October

Cantaloupes, also known as netted melons, take their name from the Italian city of Cantalupo, where they were grown after being imported from Armenia in the first century AD.  They were reportedly brought to North America by on one of Columbus's voyages, although he later noted seeing the melons cultivated by the Native Americans as well.  When choosing a cantaloupe to eat, be sure to pick one that is well netted or webbed, with a yellow background and a pleasing aroma, as the fruit must mature on the vine and will not ripen once picked.
